Diaries, 1883 Mar. - 1887 Mar. and 1890 June - 1897 Feb., describing Dawson's experiences as president of the Board of Inspectors of Convicts for Ala. Daily entries record his office work and inspection trips. Provides vivid details of conditions for prisoners working in agriculture and industry under the convict lease system, including food, treatment and health. A large number of entries discuss prisoners leased to the "Pratt Mines" and those working on Thomas Williams "penetentiary farm".

Ala. lawyer and prison inspector. Dawson was born in S.C., attended the University of Alabama and began practicing law in Camden, Wilcox Co., Ala. after 1860. He served in the Confederate States Army, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel of the 13th Alabama Infantry Regiment.
